What Is Cystic Fibrosis? A recessive single gene mutation that is passed down by either parent causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, digestive tract, and other areas of the body. It is one of the most common chronic lung diseases in children and young adults Cystic Fibrosis
Genetic Cause of the Disease Starts with a mutated CFTR gene Recessive single gene mutation Passed down by either parent Ends with the process of cystic fibrosis beginning Cells that line the passageways of vital organs produce thick sticky mucus Disrupt the flow of chloride ions and water across cell membranes Clogs the airways and glands in the organs Cystic Fibrosis
Symptoms Newborns -Delayed growth -Failure to gain weight normally -Lack of bowel movements after birth -Salty skin Lungs/sinuses -Fever -Increased coughing -Increased shortness of breath -Loss of appetite -Sinus pain or pressure Bowel function -Stomach pains -Increased gas and bloating -Nausea lost of appetite -Heavy weight loss Cystic Fibrosis
Age group affected -This is a very lethal disease, because people of all ages can be affected Life span -The average lifespan is 37 years old Cystic Fibrosis
Treatments • -There is no cure for cystic fibrosis • -There are three main things doctors use • - Anti biotics, these are used to prevent infection in the lungs • -Mucus thinning drugs, These are used to help thin the thick mucus created by the cells -Bronchodilators, Help keep the airways open by relaxing the muscles around your airways Cystic Fibrosis
Characteristics Mainly attacks three parts of the body Respiratory systems-Repeated lung and sinus infections Sweat Glands-Excess sweat loss may cause dehydration and/or metabolic imbalance. Gastrointestinal tract-Disrupts the breaking down of food and usually has a negative effect on pancreas
Interesting facts • “Woe to that child which kissed on the forehead taste salty . He is bewitched and will soon die.” This is an old bit of folklore which shows the early sightings of cystic fibrosis. • Cystic fibrosis is also called mucovicidosis due to the large amounts of mucus • Recommended diet is high fat and high calorie diet • To inherit this disease both parents need to give you the defective gene • Over 1,000 different mutations in the CFTR gene have been found • About 10 million people in America carry it but are unknown • Can cause infertility in men later on in life
