Early Life • Born in Greenock, Scotland • Born in 1645 • Grew up wanting to be a seaman
On board with Kidd • The flag was of a skull and crossbones • Ship’s names were Adventure Galley and Blessed William • Followed the regular pirate code • Crew didn’t like him
Pirating Activities • Privateer for England attacking French ships (enemy) • 1695 received royal commission to hunt pirates who bothered ships of East India Company • Crew leave him and he turned to piracy • Not a ruthless or successful pirate
Pirating Activities Continued • Caused the most trouble for India • When he captured and Indian ship they threw representatives of East India Company in jail • England upset and put him on trail for piracy in 1699 • Was hanged and put in a gibbet (iron cage) at Tilbury Point to warn others
Treasure • Buried a large amount of loot on Gardiner’s Island • During his short time with piracy he produced only one large loot
