Why is a lifelong guidance practitioner knowledge and skill-set important? • -private/personal good? • -employer good? • -citizen/user good? • -public policy/public authority good?
What are and where are the incentives to train and to continuously re-train? • Individual/personally motivated? • Employer motivated? • Citizen/user motivated? • Profession motivated? • Public policy/public authority motivated?
Is lifelong guidance practitioner a profession? • Characteristics of a profession: • Professional association, regulated by law, with responsibilities of enforcement • Cognitive base, • Institutionalized training, • Licensing, accreditation • Work autonomy: can make independent judgments about their work • Colleague control... (and) code of ethics, • High standards of professional and intellectual excellence, • "professions are occupations with special power and prestige," • “professionals have a high degree of systematic knowledge” • they comprise "an exclusive elite group," in all societies
