Our Worship andMusic in the Church Many people attend church services looking to be entertained!
Worship Creative Style “Here we are, 5:00 p.m. on a Sunday evening. The lights are dimmed, candles flicker and the sound of a small, battery-powered fountain, located next to the Communion table, fills the open room with holy reverence. There are no bulletins, no song sheets, and no pews. Folding chairs encircle a platform, and behind it looms a giant screen with the relaxing color of liquid-blue projected onto it. To one side are positioned small toddler-sized, upholstered couches and chairs. To the other side is a collection of electric band equipment and instruments. Worship is about to begin ----“creative” style!” The Mosaic of Louisville Seminary Magazine, Winter 2000, Volume 7, Number 1
Worship Creative Style “I always feel so reverent and close to God when I attend.” “The church hoped to offer a different format that would meet the needs of individuals that were currently not being met in the earlier service.” “Fellowship time and a light meal, for a nominal fee, conclude each evening service.”
Worship Creative Style “Words to hymns, choruses, and prayers of confession are projected onto a large screen to keep the worshiper’s head up, not looking down in the hymnal.” “Casual, relaxed atmosphere encourages families to worship together.” “More and more people continue to gather for this refreshing twist on the traditional style of worship they have always known.”
Liberal churches of Christ Following Suit “The problem is, those traditions (two songs, a prayer, and a song) become so fixed that they are seen by many to inhibit true worship...” Rubel Shelly....Wineskins, Vol 3, No. 5,5.
Liberal churches of Christ Following Suit “Those using vocal music should be a bit more understanding and incorporating toward the Baby Boomers and Generation X-ers who want some things more in sync with their pulses and those of their searching contemporaries.” Rubel Shelly....Wineskins, Vol 3, No. 5,5.
Liberal churches of Christ Following Suit Dave Miller in his book Piloting the Strait Says: “Modern theology has already brought several things to the worship in many churches of Christ today to include: special music (solos, choirs), drama (costumed actors), Lord’s Supper observed on most any day, babies dedicated in the assembly, hand clapping and lifting up of hands Pentecostal style, women used in the leading of songs and prayers, Christmas and Easter are observed with the appropriate actions gleaned from denominationalism.” “Professing to be wise, they became fools.” (Romans 1:22)
God's Tradition Versus Man’s Creation • God has set forth how He expects to be worshiped • John 4:24 • Man has “created” an alternate style of worship • We must respect what God has said concerning our music in worship to Him
God's Tradition Versus Man’s Creation God Says: Man Says: Matthew 26:30 Acts 16:25 1 Corinthians 14:15 Ephesians 5:19 Colossians 3:16 Hebrews 2:12 Hebrews 13:15 James 5:13 Scripture?
Lessons Learned • Let God direct how we are to worship Him • Colossians 3:17 • Apostasy of one teaching will lead to the apostasy of other teachings • 1 Corinthians 1:10 • Anything added or subtracted from His Word is not pleasing to Him. • Revelation 22:18-19 May we all be determined to follow God, wavering NOT!
