Where are they found… • South of the Artic Tundra in the Northern regions across North America, Asia, and Europe • Above certain altitudes in the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains ranges in the USA
Climate • The Winters are long, dry, and extremely cold • Summers are short with cool & warm temperatures
Plants • Coniferous (cone-bearing) • Evergreen trees ex: spruce, cedar, hemlock, pine • Low Plant diversity because few can survive the winter and the decomposition is slow, making it harder for other plants to grow
Plant Adaptations • Keep their leaves year-round • Small, needle-shaped, wax covered leaves which can withstand the intense cold and droughts in the winter
Wildlife • Large variety of wildlife • Ex: bears, wolves, moose, lynx, burrowing rodents • Ex: Caribou spend the winter in taiga and the summer in the artic tundra • In the summer many birds come to eat the hoards of insects
Wildlife Adaptations • Thick fur • Food storage • Hibernation • Migration • Camouflage • Sharp fangs and claws
Human Impacts • Out of all the types of forests, coniferous forest are thought to have been the least affected by humans yet now due to demand for paper, more trees are being cut down • most of the world’s softwood timber come from the coniferous forests • By hunting many of these animals, some species have become endangered
Fun Facts • The Coniferous Forests is the largest biome in the world • Taiga is the Russian term for coniferous forest • The three most dominant trees are fir, pine, and spruce • The Coniferous forest was named after the conifer tree that produces seeds and cones
