Definition Of Sick House Syndrome • Sick house syndrome (SHS) is a combination of ailments (a syndrome) associated with an individual's place of work (office building) or residence. • Most of the sick house syndrome is related to poor indoor air quality.
You may experience eye, nose, and throat irritation, stuffiness, skin rashes, headaches, nausea, flu-like symptoms. Symptoms following exposure come and go fairly quickly-- you may notice them within an hour or two of entering a building but also notice that they will be gone within an hour or two of leaving a building.All of symptoms may caused by sick house syndrome
The EPA(environment protection agency) informs us that 6 out of 10 homes and buildings are "sick“, Indoor pollution is due in large part to volatile organic compounds (often referred to as: VOCs) that evaporate from home decorating and cleaning products. Levels of pollutants in indoor air can be from two to more than 100 times higher than outdoors . According to the National Safety Council , Americans spend about 90% of their time indoors, and 65% of that time at home. So indoor air is going to impact our health far more than outdoor air. Harmful indoor chemicals can lead to anemia, sinusitis, allergies, asthma, chronic fatigue, a generally weakened immune system, cancer, brain damage and even death. Exposure to radon and tobacco exposure can lead to lung cancer.
How To Improve Indoor Air Quality • The Most Important Step: Studies show that the air should be changed several times a day to prevent build up of pollutants. • Install an air purifier, or an air purification system . • Using green plants to reduce the levels of indoor air pollution. • Understand the role of Green Cleaning . (Soap (not detergent), vinegar , baking soda , washing soda , salt , ammonia, borax , alcohol , cornstarch , lemon juice , Trisodium phosphate (TSP) , steel wool, and mineral oil are great for keeping the house clean)
