Goals of the Effort • Identify key skills based on 40 years of ASRC experience • Mostly Search • Some extrications • Rare semi-tech • Remove non-essential skills • “Even out” the skills/time across levels • Maintain common approach/skills • Linear approach understood by AHJs • Avoid Operational Titles • Be aware of testability

Overall Structure • FIELD-IV (Trainee) • Directly supervised by (paired with) a Field-III or higher • Goal: Completed in one weekend (includes skill verification) • FIELD-III • Member of a field team • Semi-tech litter team member • FIELD-II • Leads most SEARCH tasks • FIELD-I • Leads complex search tasks • Leads Rescue Tasks (including rigging systems)

Navigation • FIELD-IV (Trainee) • Report your USNG location over a radio (using GPS) • Plot a point on a map given coordinates • FIELD-III • Basic compass functions • Use GPS to navigate to a point • FIELD-II • Topo map proficiency • Navigate with map/compass • Navigate to 3 points 300 meters apart (daytime) • FIELD-I • Navigate to 3 retroreflective points 300 meters apart (night)

Communications • FIELD-IV (Trainee) • Transmit message using team radio • Report your USNG location over a radio (using GPS) • FIELD-III • Install batteries, antenna, change channels • FIELD-II • Improve communications problems • Phonetic alphabet • FIELD-I • Detect and solve communication problems at a mission

Semi-Tech • FIELD-IV (Trainee) • Horizontal litter carry • FIELD-III • Litter team member (includes “tying-in”) • Haul Team member; operates belay • FIELD-II • Litter tie-in • Operate raising and lower systems • FIELD-I • Leads rescue/extraction efforts (i.e., ROC = Rescue Onscene Coordinator) • Rigs semi-tech systems

Knots • FIELD-IV (Trainee) • None • FIELD-III – Goal: Tie in on semi-tech litter team • ASRC seat harness • Barrel knot (double fisherman’s) • Water knot • Overhand (backup) • FIELD-II – Goal – assist with systems • Figure 8 family (simple, bend, follow-through) • Anchors (e.g., modified basket hitch, wrap-3-pull-2) • FIELD-I – Goal – rig systems • Butterfly knot

  12. Remaining work • More text descriptions of expected capabilities • Finish SM portion of standard • Field-IV is qualification with certification delegated to the GTO (Group Training Officer) by the Credentialing Board • Discern how we standardize approach across the conference • In distant past this was in the ops manual • Should this be in training standard?
