Diversity workshop • Aim of the workshop: “to explore how Diversity considerations can be taken into account when planning programme and activities at the local level.” • Objectives of the Workshop: • Get to know key concepts in working with diversity in scouting • recognize the value of diversity • be able to start developing activities where diversity issues is taken into account

What is Diversity? • Diversity may refer to: • Multiculturalism, the ideology of including people of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds • Diversity (politics), the political and social policy of encouraging tolerance for people of different backgrounds • Diversity (business), the business tactic which encourages diversity to better serve a heterogeneous customer base • Diversity training, the process of educating employees, students or volunteers to function in a diverse environment • Biodiversity, the variation of life forms within a given ecosystem • Diversity scheme, a method for improving the reliability of a message signal by using multiple communications channels
(Taken from Presentation on Cultural Diversity and work life) What is Diversity in Scouting? • By Diversity in Scouting we mainly deal with cultural diversity (though political use of the term is important also)

Why work with Diversity? • Scouting is open til all – the implications of this means the you actually have to be open to all • Just open… or inviting? • Recognize the value of Diversity – a realisation of the fact that diversity creates more opportunities • Realize… or celebrate? • Strategic Priority at world level - ”Reaching out” • Just Strategic… or also operational?
Values of working with Diversity (examples) What are they? • Inspire creativity • Increase knowledge • Improve understanding of differences • Inspire to avoid discrimination • Increase possible number of members • Increased leader recruitment groups • Etc.
Discrimination • Discrimination means to treat people according to the stereotyped image of a certain group they belong to, e.g. treating all Scots as if they held on hard to their money. (Def. from Them ‘n Us) • Discrimination ~ the opposite of “recognizing the value of Diversity” – and a reason for working with Diversity as scouts!
How to work with Diversity? • Implementation of Diversity in Youth Programme • When developing new programme – incorporate Diversity in all working areas (~ ’Diversified’ activities) • Supplement on Diversity programme to existing programme • Guidelines on ’How to work with Diversity at local level” • Recruitment • Diversity of leaders • Diversity of scout (~ mirror the society)
Who - the region’s work on Diversity • For Youth Programme area: • Developing Guidelines on how to implement Diversity issues when developing new programme • Support the work of the Overture Network • Run Diversity Round table in autumn 2009 • For Adult Resources area: • Raising awareness of Diversity in recruitment • For Organisation Development: • Strategic, political, promotional term

Workshop group task • Develop an activity focused on local level that takes a specific Diversity issue into account according to scenario (ethnicity, gender, abilities): • List considerations and major concerns in working with the diversity issue • List pros and cons in working with this diversity issue • Develop a 3 minute game / activity /situation /etc. that deals with the diversity issue (based on your considerations and concerns) • Check the activity with the other participants • Receive applause and feedback
Scenario 1 • You are a group of local cub scout leaders who are planning the coming scout year. You know that you after the summer holiday will have 25 cub scout in your unit. 5 of these have another ethnic background and have been in your country for 3-5 years. • Based on these informations, do the group task. You are welcome to make your own further assumptions regarding the group :-)
Scenario 2 • You are a group of local scout leaders who are planning the coming scout year. You know that you after the summer holiday will have 25 explorer scout (11-15 years)in your scout unit. 5 of these have another gender than majority group of 20 (you will decide whether the 5 (the minority) will be girls or boys). • Based on these informations, do the group task. You are welcome to make your own further assumptions regarding the group :-)
Scenario 3 • You are a group of local rover leaders who are planning the coming scout year. You know that you after the summer holiday will have 10 rovers in your unit. 1 of these is wheelchair user and has been this since childhood. • Based on these informations, do the group task. You are welcome to make your own further assumptions regarding the group :-)
CHECK • Present (DO/CHECK) your activity for the others and receive feedback. • Afterwards explain your considerations and concerns
Diversity Wrap-up • IMPACT – How can we, as NSO/NSAs assist and support our local groups in working with diversity? • How can our local groups support us in working with diversity? • How can the European Scout Region assist and support the NSO/NSAs in working with diversity?
