  2. Chinese Exclusion Act (1882) • First time U.S. restricted immigration • Prevented Chinese immigration for 10 years • Could not become U.S. citizens • Despite help with transcontinental railroad • Video: CA Gold Mines

  3. Immigration Act of 1917 • Also called “Asiatic Barred Zone” Act • Heavily impacted Asian Indians • Restricted “undesirables” from other countries – could not enter U.S. • Had to read English

  4. Immigration Act of 1924 • aka Johnson–Reed Act • National Origins Act of 1929 • Set quotas on certain countries • Japan, Korea • Non-quota vs. quota immigrant • Quota: 150,000 immigrants

  5. Tydings-McDuffie Act of 1934 • Slashed immigration quota from Philippines by 50% (50 people) • Reclassified as “aliens” • Also called “The Philippine Independence Act ” • Activity tied into Philippine independence

  6. Tydings-McDuffie Act (cont’d) From America Is In The Heart: I prepared a leaflet and distributed copies to the Filipinos in the country. When Sunday came a crowd gathered in the Workers’ Hall on Main Street. Jose presided and I acted as secretary. The meeting was very simple and orderly. “How come we Filipinos in California can’t buy or lease real estate?” a man asked. “Why are we denied civil service jobs?” asked another. “Why can’t we marry women of the Caucasian race? And why are we not allowed to marry in this state?” “Why can’t we practice law?” “Why are we denied the right of becoming naturalized American citizens?” “Why are we discriminated against in relief agencies?” “Why are we denied better housing conditions?” “Why can’t we stop the police from handling us like criminals?” “Why are we denied recreational facilities in public parks and other such places?”

  8. Immigration & Nationality Act of 1965 • aka Hart-Cellar Act • Abolished quota system for national origins • Family relationships • Immigrants’ skills • 170,000 visas / year • Not including relatives of U.S. or “specials”
