RET TEACHING MODULES Next Gen Project Erica Ajder July 27,2010 http://dev.ret-erau.com/Modules/ajder.asp
Next Gen Project • an ambitious program to transform the nation’s air traffic control from today’s radar-based system to a satellite-based system designed to let aircraft fly shorter, more direct routes • The system would use GPS for navigation, enabling airlines to reduce flight distances and use runways more efficiently • required time of arrival (RTA) is used to more precisely meet meter fix crossing times; increases safety
Modules • Newton’s Laws Using Aeronautics • Air Traffic Control
Newton’s Laws with Aeronautics Objectives • Understand the relationship between acceleration, mass & force (F=ma) • Calculate speed, velocity and acceleration in relation to aeronautics • Design, create and redesign a model airplane in order to test it’s effectiveness in flight • Use and apply Newton’s 2nd law of motion • Understand and find payload amounts for safe flight
Activities • Interactive PowerPoint lesson with practice • Practice/Application worksheet for students • Crossword for Vocabulary Terminology Practice • Lab Activity-students design/Redesign/Test glider • Velocity vs. Acceleration PowerPoint • Application of Velocity vs. Acceleration
Examples • What is the acceleration of an aircraft flying at a velocity of 220 m/s and reducing airspeed for approach for landing to 160 m/s over 20 sec? + or – acceleration? • If an airplane has a mass of 45,000 kg and a thrust of 5000N with a drag of 3000 N, what is the acceleration of the body? Remember F = Thrust – Drag • If a 747 has an empty weight of 184,570 kg, can hold a gross weight of 412,775 kg and when fully fueled has a mass of 356425 kg what is the maximum payload of the plane?
Air Traffic Control Module Objectives: • Understand that math and science are connected utilizing math skills and the formula D= R * T in order to line up aircraft at various intersection points • Calculate speed, velocity and acceleration in relation to aeronautics • Using a flight simulator, line up planes converging on a given point utilizing changes in speed or vector in order to maintain a safe distance between airplanes
Activities • Interactive PowerPoint Lesson with sector practice • Sector practice/application worksheet for students • ATC Crossword for vocabulary practice • Web Quest for ATC • Computerized SIM “Lab” • ATC Sector Practice “moving” activity
ATC Examples • Which plane is closer to OAL? How far ahead is this plane? • Will the spacing be at least 2 nmi? • How much spacing is needed for ideal spacing? • What could the controller do to achieve at least ideal spacing? • If you change the route of AAL12 to go through MINAH directly to MOD would that correct the spacing?
