RET TEACHING MODULES Next Gen Project Erica Ajder July 27,2011 http://dev.ret-erau.com/Modules/2011/Ajder/ericaAjder.asp
Next Gen Project • An ambitious program to transform the nation’s air traffic control from today’s radar-based system to a satellite-based system designed to let aircraft fly shorter, more direct routes • The system would use GPS for navigation, enabling airlines to reduce flight distances and use runways more efficiently • The more direct routes would allow for significant savings in fuel which is helpful for cost and the environment
Space Modules • Planetary Motion • Celestial Bodies and space exploration
Planetary Motion Objectives: • Know the 2 major things that affect gravity- mass & distance • Explain the roll that gravity plays in the formation of planets, stars & solar systems • Compare & contrast properties of objects in the solar system including the sun, planets & moons to those of Earth such as gravitational force, distance from the Sun, & speed • Use phrases such as “results support” or “fail to support” in science, understanding that science does not offer conclusive “proof” of a claim.
Planetary Motion Activities • Planetary Motion Interactive Power point • Gravity Activity Worksheet • Fishing Weight Drop Lab • Orbit Simulation • Projectile Motion Simulation • Kepler’s Law Simulation • Planetary Motion Crossword
Celestial Bodies • Recognize that there are enormous distances between objects in space and apply our knowledge of light and space travel to understand this distance. • Describe and classify specific physical properties of stars: apparent magnitude (brightness), temperature (color), size, and luminosity (absolute brightness). • Create models of solar properties including: rotation, structure of the Sun, convection, sunspots, and solar flares. • Compare relationships between distances between the planets and the sun and its relationship to length of year and temperature • Identify and compare characteristics of the electromagnetic spectrum such as wavelength, frequency, use, and hazards.
