Strategy of Trigonometry TAN(37) 1 X x 483 = x 483 inches . The tree truck forms a right angle with the ground and its shadow creates a right triangle that can be used to indirectly measure the height of the tree. = 483 X TAN (37) X= 363.96 + 61 X = 424.96 inches Palm Tree Height 37 61 inches Shadow length 61 in Height of Regan
Similar Triangles Method X 397 inches 86 inches Regan’s height, lined up with the tree’s shadow, creates a right triangle within the tree’s shadow - making the triangles similar by AA similarity. X x 483 61 x 86 = 29463 = 86 X Palm tree height X = 342.6 in 61 inches Height of Regan Person’s Shadow Full shadow
30 60 90 Method Using the 30 60 90 method we were able to determine that X could be shown as the short leg root 3 plus the height of the person measuring the angle. 60 215√3 = X X = 372.4 +61 X = 433.4 Height of palm tree X 90 30 215 inches 61 inches Height of Regan Distance of shadow
Comparison • Our three measurements have an overall variance of 90.8 inches or 7.56 feet. • We estimate that the most accurate measurement is 433.4 inches using the similar triangles method because we were able to compare the height of the tree to Regan’s exact height. This helps us get a more exact answer. • Our group preferred the similar triangles method because it was the most logical and made the most sense to us.
Comparisons • We would recommend the similar triangles method because it was the simplest and we feel came up with the most accurate results. • The similar triangles method is also the most adaptable because it uses the most perceptive methods. • Our group observed how easily we were able to come up with a rough estimate of the trees height just by using geometry.
