What Is Indirect Measurement? • Indirect measurement uses different mathematical techniques to find a measurement when direct measurement is not possible.
Pythagorean Theorem • Indirect Measurements can be obtained through using the Pythagorean theorem. • The formula for this theorem is a2 + b2 = c2 where a and b are the sides and c is the hypotenuse. • Two sides are required in order to used this theorem.
Trigonometry • Trigonometry is a branch of math focused primarily on triangles and triangulation. • The three different formulas it consist of is based around sin, cosine, and tangent. • Sin = opposite/hypotenuse • Cosine = • Tangent = opposite/adjacent
Proportions • Proportion is a relationship between things or parts of things with respect to comparative magnitude, quantity, or degree. • You can use proportion to find the measurement of an object by using the measurement of a similar object.
Other Examples of Indirect Measurement • Measuring the distance between the earth and the sun • Finding the value of density (mass/volume) • Measuring the diameter of the earth. • Finding displacement and midpoint • Finding the velocity and speed of and object
