  1. The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action Idaho is beginning its third year as a member of the national Campaign for Action which now includes all 50 states!

Idaho Nursing Action Coalition: history • October 2010: IOM Report on the Future of Nursing released • December 2010: First national Summit launching the Campaign for Action • February 2011: Became Wave II state, co-leads IALN and IHA with broad coalition commitment by education, industry, government and business. • June 2011: first INAC Summit, established leadership and priorities • June 2012: Second Summit, established goals and action steps, committed to and defined SIP grant application focus • August 2012: Submitted SIP application

Idaho Nursing Action Coalition: 2013 update • Three Action Teams have identified goals, including baseline data needs and developed action steps • Successfully competed for SIP grant, secured maximum match, and have hired four project managers • Participate in national CFA webinars, state calls, website, blogs and posts, and national summit in February • Created INAC page on NLI website with national links • June 13, 2013 Third Annual Idaho INAC Working Summit that outlined the work for 2013-2014

  4. Action Teams • Education: Lori Stinson, Sandie Nadelson (recruiting additional co-chair representing practice) • Leadership (Inter-professional Collaboration): Buffie Main (recruiting 2nd co-chair, preferably a nurse) • Access to Care: Sandy Evans, Cherese Severson

  5. State Implementation Program (SIP) • $150,000 grant funding opportunity announced by RWJF in June 2012 • Required 2:1 matching funds of up $75,000 • Required focused project on no more than 2 of the 8 IOM recommendations

  6. “Advancing Nursing in Idaho to Improve Health” • Submitted grant application August 27th 2012 • Received over $78,000 in match commitments • Focused on 2 IOM recommendations: • #3 Implement nurse residency programs and other professional development opportunities targeting nurses transitioning to different roles • #1 Remove scope of practice barriers

  7. “Advancing Nursing in Idaho to Improve Health” • Idaho SIP includes 4 separate projects: • Create a statewide model for new graduate residency: Val Greenspan project manager • Provide professional development opportunity for transition to leadership role: Deena Rauch project manager • Create a model curriculum to improve transition to nurse educator role: Ann Hubbert project manager • Conduct APRN practice and employer surveys : Julie Marcum project manager

New Nurse Residency • Goal is to create a model statewide curriculum that can be adopted by an employer interested in launching a new residency, and to pilot an additional residency site in Idaho • Literature review is done, initial comparisons of curriculum available across Idaho and nationally • Stakeholder input received • Focusing on impacting geographical gaps, especially CAH’s and rural settings • Examining opportunities for collaborative partnerships, building on existing programs, regional approach and research evidence

Questions for Discussion • Describe an ideal transition to new practice experience in your setting for the first year of employment • What is the best way to address scheduling/ work release limitations in CAH’s? • On-line vs. face to face opportunities? • What is your reaction to the development of a regional programs vs a site specific program? • What tangible support for sustainability is needed? • Would you like to participate in the stakeholder group or consider being a pilot site?

Transition to the Leadership Role • Goal is to create or adopt a 4-5 day leadership course targeted at middle management that will be available annually statewide by 2015 • ACNL Leadership Institute has been recommended for purchase • Recruiting additional members for the leadership advisory team. • Identifying faculty to teach modules of the course: leadership excellence, healthcare economics, human resource management, performance , practice and policy • Pilot with at least 10 attendees scheduled for Fall 2014

Transition to the Nurse Educator Role • Goal is to develop a transition program to support clinical nurses assuming academic education positions • Systematic review of the literature is underway • The focus is on research and design of curriculum and on professional development to prepare nurses without an academic foundation in nursing education • Pilot project comprised of clinicians who have been recently transitioned to education has begun • Publication of the work is anticipated for 2015

  12. Improving Access to Care • Goal is to design and distribute a survey to evaluate APRN barriers to practice in Idaho • The survey is in its final stages of drafting • Survey is scheduled to be mailed early in 2014 • Applied for IBN grant to finance the survey data collection and analysis • An employer survey will follow the APRN practice survey • The results will be summarized and an action plan developed
