Black Bean Incident 2ND SIX WEEKS TEST REVIEW Fredrick Remington captured this event in his painting, "The Drawing of the Black Bean" After the Battle of San Jacinto and the Treaties of Velasco in 1836, Santa Anna and the Mexican Army did not stop invading Texas. The Black Bean Incident followed from the Texans response to the Mexican invasions of Texas. In 1842, Alexander Somervell, a customs officer (a Texan), attacked the Mexican Army, recaptured Laredo, and took Guerrero, Mexico. Afterwards, five Texas captains and their men refused to return to Texas and continued the attack at Cuidad Meir. Outnumbered, the Texans were defeated and marched towards Mexico City via Matamoros and Monterrey for punishment. In February, 1843, the Texans escaped, but 176 were recaptured and sent to Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico, where Santa Anna ordered their execution. The governor refused and the prisoners were moved to Rancho Salado. Through diplomatic efforts, Santa Anna agreed to compromise: only one in ten would die…every tenth man who drew a black bean would be executed. Note: To help determine who would die, Mexican Commander Colonel Huerta had 159 white beans and seventeen black beans placed in a pot. In what came to be known as the Black Bean Episode or the Bean Lottery, the Texans were blindfolded and ordered to draw beans. Officers and then enlisted men, in alphabetical order, were ordered to draw. The seventeen men who drew a black bean were allowed to write letters home and then were executed by firing squad. On the evening of March 25, 1843, the Texans were shot in two groups, one of nine men and one of eight. According to legend, Huerta placed the black beans in last and had the officers pick first, so that they would make up the majority of those killed. SAMPLE “LETTER” ENTRY The Journal Michael Austin Hayes During the Texas Revolution Battle of Gonzales / October 2, 1835 Dear Mama: I’m sorry it’s been so long since I have written. Today was a great day. We got attacked by the Mexican army. We heard that they wanted their cannon back that they loaned us to protect the settlements from the Apaches and Comanches Indians. Our Sergeant just told us about this a while ago. He said there was no way on his “watch” that we were giving up the goods. We were ready for them. We got together all our scrap metal and made our own ammunition. It was crazy. We used old metal coffee cups and forks and spoons. We also made this flag that said, “Come and Take It.” When they showed up, we fired the cannon and they ran for their lives! They had one casualty and we had none. We won! Tonight at supper, our Sergeant told us that he was proud of us but not to think of this as over. He was not smiling when he said this. I went to bed glad that we won, but wondering if we were going to have to fight again. We have heard whispers of Texans wanting their independence. I wonder if this is the beginning of it all. SAMPLE “JOURNAL” ENTRY Reminder: Not for Reproduction or Copying The Journal Michael Austin Hayes During the Texas Revolution Battle of Gonzales October 2, 1838: Today was a different kind of day. We woke up to the news from our Sergeant that the Mexican army was coming to get a cannon that they had loaned us. We were using it to protect our settlements from the Comanches and Apaches that were always attacking us. We asked our Sergeant why and he said that the Mexican government believed we were building up weapons and men to fight for our independence. We’ve had some of our leaders already go to Mexico City to ask permission to be an independent state of Mexico but the government leaders turned them away. Santa Anna is their President and General of their army.He does not sound like a very reasonable man and we hear he has a bad temper and does not like to lose. The Mexican Army did show up today but we were ready thank God. We had turned scrap metal into ammunition and still had time to make a flag that said, “Come and Take It.” We all felt very proud of all we had done to prepare for this fight. We are just regular citizens with very little military training. We fired one shot and they turned and high tailed it out of here. They did suffer one casualty and we had none. It was exciting but also very scary. I had never fought before. Our Sergeant told us it was a good victory but may not be the last. I went to bed with a belly ache from worry. M.A.H.
