  3. Rule #1: Never drop a quote into your paper. Always embed it into your own writing. NO: “The fact that the old, spotted mirror reflected the dear departed in the family was not enough to upset our life style” (Llano 138). YES: The characters continue to behave normally even though “the old spotted mirror [reflects] the dear departed in the family” (Llano 138).

  4. Rule 2: Maintain present tense even if the quote is in past tense. No: The family discovers that the “old spotted mirror reflected the dear departed” (Llano 138). Yes: The family discovers that the “old spotted mirror [reflects] the dear departed” (Llano 138).

  5. Rule #3: Make sure the reader knows where the quote came from. Maria Elena Llano’s story “In the Family” uses a realistic setting with a “large mirror in the living room” that is “inhabited” (138). OR The story “In the Family” uses a realistic setting with a “large mirror in the living room” that is “inhabited” (Llano 138).

  6. Rule #4: Avoid saying “This quote shows” or “This story says” No: “The fact that the old, spotted mirror reflected the dear departed in the family was not enough to upset our life style.” This quote shows that the characters behave normally when something strange happens. Yes: The characters behave normally even though the “old spotted mirror [reflects] the dear departed in the family” (Llano 138).

  7. Now it is time for you to try it. 1. Select a quote that you want to embed in your magical realism mini essay. Note the page. 2. Think about the reason you are using this quote. Which element of magical realism does it support? Write one sentence about the quote. 3. Now combine your sentence and the quote, using your notes from this PowerPoint. 4. You may work with a partner.
