Our goal: today we are going to learn how to reduce fractions This is important because: Understanding fractions will help us earn an 80% or better on the NY State Math exam and Ms. Dass’ final exam! Fractions help us review multiplication and division while applying to real life situations like money, cooking, etc.
Sometimes fractions with different denominators and numerators actually represent the same amount they are EQUIVALENT fractions So let’s look at an example… Say we have 2 sheets of paper that are the exact same size. I cut 1 sheet in half and color one half green. I cut the second sheet in four pieces and color 2 green. 2 out of 4 is still ½ of the paper! We reduce because it allows us to use smaller numbers which are easier to work with! What does it mean to reduce fractions?!
So how do Ireducefractions?! • We will use the Greatest Common Factor to reduce a fraction to simplest form (or its smallest form). • We will divide our fraction by the GCF of the numerator and denominator!
So watch me… (copy as I work and DO NOT TALK OR CALL OUT!) • Reduce 10/15 to its simplest form. • Reduce 12 out of 16 to lowest terms.
Reduce 2/6 to lowest terms. Find the simplest form of 18 out of 48. Reduce 20/30 to lowest terms. Put 15 out of 20 in simplest form. So let’s try a few….
