HEALTH • You are responsible for your own health • What does a healthy individual look like? • *health = the combination of physical, mental(emotional), and social well-being. • spiritual, occupational, environmental • Every decision we make affects our health in some way or another • Also affects those around us • It’s important to be balanced

PHYSICAL HEALTH • *How well your body functions • 3 conditions must be met to be considered healthy • Perform daily activities • Deal with everyday stresses • Avoid injury • How do you keep a healthy body? • 8-10 hours of sleep; 8 cups of water/day; 30-60 minutes of physical activity; avoid ATOD; bathe, brush, floss, shower, etc. daily

MENTAL(emotional) HEALTH • *A reflection of how you feel about yourself, meet daily demands of life, and cope with problems that occur • People who are mentally healthy: • Enjoy challenges; accept responsibility, have a sense of control; can express emotions appropriately; are generally positive; make responsible decisions

  6. SOCIAL HEALTH • *ability to interact with others • It’s your network of friends and peers • NOT having a lot of friends • Characteristics include: • Seeking/lending support; communicating clearly; listening to others; showing respect

HEALTH CONTINUUM • A balanced triangle = wellness • *an overall state of total health • Health is always changing • Sliding scale • Could be high one day, low the next- why? • Sickness, death in family, disease, etc • ½ Americans live with a chronic disease • Most are choice related • Smoking, inactivity, poor nutrition, obesity, etc…

INFLUENCES • HEREDITY: • *all traits biologically passed from parents • Important to know conditions that run in family • ENVIRONMENT: • *the sum of your surroundings • Physical, social, and culture • Neighborhood; school; air quality; access to medical care; availability of parks and rec, etc…

  9. H.E.A.L.T.H. INFLUENCES • ATTITUDE • Your perceived outlook can affect your health • LIFESTYLE (BEHAVIOR) • Risk behaviors vs. healthful behaviors • TECHNOLOGY/MEDIA • HOW OLD YOU ARE (AGE)

  10. RISK BEHAVIORS • *Any action that can potentially threaten yours or others health • Most risk behaviors can be controlled • Choice related • Should make safe and responsible decisions • CDC identifies 6 high risk behaviors • Account for nearly all deaths and disabilities under the age of 24

  11. RISK BEHAVIORS • Tobacco Use • Unhealthy Diet • Inadequate physical activity • ATOD use • Sexual behaviors • Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence

  12. RISK BEHAVIORS • *Cumulative Risk • related risks that increase in effect with each added risk • *Prevention • taking steps to keep something from happening or getting worse • *Abstinence • Deliberate decision to avoid high-risk behavior

LIFESTYLE FACTORS • *personal habits or behaviors related to how a person lives • Pos. behaviors increase health & quality of life • 8-10 hours of sleep • Eating breakfast • Variety of nutritious foods • Physically active 30-60 minutes/day • Maintaining a healthy weight • Abstaining from ATOD

  14. HEALTH CARE COSTS • $4 trillion ($12000/person) • Mostly related to lifestyle choices • 19% age 6-11 are overweight/obese • 18% age 12-19 are overweight/obese

  15. HEALTH LITERACY • *a person’s ability to learn and understand basic health information • 4 components • Critical thinker • Responsible citizen • Self-directed learner • Effective communicator

  16. HEALTH SKILLS • *Specific tool and strategies used to maintain, protect, and improve health • Also called life skills • Communication • Share ideas & feelings; listen carefully • Refusal • Say no to unhealthy behaviors • Conflict Resolution • Able to resolve problems in a healthy way

  19. REFUSAL SKILLS • *Communication strategies that help you say no when urged to take part in unsafe or unhealthful behaviors • Say no in a firm voice • Explain why • Offer an alternative • Stand your ground • Leave if necessary
