Turnitin in Pakistan • Started in 2009 • Higher Education Commission acquired a country level account • Each University got 1000 accounts • Followed by a Plagiarism Policy- to chalk out rules and regulations • Most used is Originality Check™
Some Discoveries • Turnitin Implementation didn’t follow necessary amendments in Education policy. • Implementing from Top ( Post Graduate level) without necessary capacity building had its huge drawbacks
Student’s Version of this reality • Distanced from Turnitin Use, hence have negative beliefs • Reflecting on not-so-sure instructors
The Plan • Using Originality Report as a teaching aid • For Plagiarism awareness • Academic integrity/ Ethics • Writing Conventions • Referencing Styles
Methodology • Participants • 35 Pakistani Postgraduate Students, • M.A. English (Final Semester)
The Research Plan • A Questionnaire • 5 Screencasts ( Walk-through Tutorials) • Interactive Sessions • Hands-on Practice of Turnitin Student Accounts
Interactive Sessions • Some of Students’ works were processed in Turnitin in Public on Multimedia and • There was a mixed air of excitement and anxiety. • Students were asked to comprehend the possible meaning of the highlighted text
Sessions Detail • Total Session: 3 • Each Session followed a Home work of a write-up- that needed to cite 2 websites, a book, a newspaper, and a journal article, on a self-chosen topic, to be produced before the next session • There was a Gap of a week in each session
Conclusion • Amended Education Policy, that gives proper focus to Plagiarism Consciousness/Sensitivity • Implementation at Lower Levels • Instructor Training and uplifting technologically • Open Talks/Seminars on Plagiarism related issues and about Turnitin mechanism for Students and Instructors
Conclusion • Students should be accessed where they spend most of their time, internet • Provision of training Screencasts, video tutorials in Urdu, as well as regional languages. • Presence on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Famous Blogs • Guide Students about Authorship and Originality
Conclusion • In Evaluation of Assignments, citation and referencing should be made as a credit component. • Students should be encouraged to engage directly with Turnitin accounts, so to remove the misconception of imagining Turnitin with Awe and Fear.
