  3. The beginning • 1990 - Alan Emtage and Archie • 1993 – Veronica (Very Easy Rodent-Oriented Net-wide Index to Computerized Archieves) and Jughead (Jonzy’s Universal Gopher Hierachy Excavation And Display)

  4. Innovation in the mid 90s • Matthew Grey’s World Wide Web Wanderer The first robot on the World Wide Web • ALIWEB – Archie-Like Indexing of the Web Allows a webmaster to register the information they want listed Smaller database then sites that use robots

Today’s leaders • 1994 – Yahoo started by David Filo and Jerry Yang Began as a searchable database but has since added search engine technology • 1998 – Larry Page and Sergey Brin start the search engine Google The site uses the relationship between websites to produce better results Google is now experimenting with personalized searches

  6. Conclusion • There have been many seach engine innovations developed in only fifteen years • Many search engine companies have been bought out or have gone bankrupt • Users don’t care about brand loyalty but do care about speed and convenience
