Objective: SWBAT Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Edith Hamilton’s “The Two Great Gods of Earth” through accurate and cohesive formed responses. 3 December 2013 English I Honors Do Now: Determine the author’s purpose (the Ancient Greeks) for “The Two Great Gods of Earth” by Edith Hamilton from Mythology (Hamilton 53). Describe various roles Demeter and Dionysus play in natural phenomena.
Objective: SWBAT Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Edith Hamilton’s “The Two Great Gods of Earth” through accurate and cohesive formed responses. Sample Response: The ancient Greeks generated the myth of Demeter, contained within Hamilton’s “The Two Great Gods” to form rational explanations for natural phenomena. Persephone’s kidnapping causes Demeter, the goddess of the harvest to enter a phase of mourning, and thus to neglect her earthly duties. While in the realm of Hades, Persephone is fed pomegranate, which entices her to return to the underworld for part of each year (Hamilton 50 – 53). The tale about Persephone’s disappearance and Demeter's resulting grief serves to explain the annual reoccurrence of seasons. Demeter’s tale serves to explain an out of the ordinary natural occurrences through associations with the supernatural.
