  1. Chapter 5 Herbs that expel dampness • introduction • Herbs that are fragrant，dry the dampness harmonize spleen. • Functions: abreact Qi stagnation 疏畅气机、tonify spleen and stomach, resolve dampness宣化湿浊.

  2. Dampness sticky，spleen like dryness, dislike dampness，dampness in Spleen & G in Middle Jiao—affect the functions. Symptoms…? • Western medicine diseases: acute gastritis, diarrhea, dysentery, ulcer, gastroptosis etc.

  3. Main effects： • 1. adjust stomach & intestines movement • Herbs has essential oil. Can regulate the stomach & intestine functions. Examples: • Pei lan佩兰、Beidoukou白豆蔻 enhance the stomach & intestines tension • Saren砂仁 intestines movement • Relax intestine & stomach spasm， examples: Houpe厚朴、Cangzu苍术、Saren砂仁.

Anti-microbes • magnolol厚朴酚、cangzu苍术、Pogostemon广藿香酮 can inhibit or kill G+/G- bacteria, virus, broad spectrum antibiotics. • Cangzu can anti fungi, mold yeast.

  6. Houpo厚朴(Magnolia officnalis)Components: essential oil & some alkaloids.

  7. Functions & indications Houpo厚朴 dry dampness, remove food stognation, harmonize Qi, stop wheezing. Treatment : dampness in zhongjiao (spleen & Stomach), abdominal tension, diarrhea, sputum cause wheezing.

  8. 1. Main Effects • （1）regulate stomach & intestine function厚朴 can stimulate animal intestine muscle, also can inhibit intestine spasm. • （2）enhance digestive glands secretion • 厚朴essential oil can stimuli taste Nerve—glands secretion in Stomach.

  9. （3）Anti-ulcer抗溃疡 • 厚朴 inhibit rat ulcer model , reduce the acid secretion in animal. • （4）Protect liver function保肝 • 厚朴 protect the viral hepatitis in animal model

  10. （5）Anti-bacteria/virus抗菌抗病毒 • It can suppress staphylococcus aureus, typhoid, Bacillus, Bacillus dysenteriae • （6）anti-pyretic sedating action It can stop the pain caused by heat in rats

  11. 2 other effects （1）inhibit CNS and relax muscle • 厚朴酚 inhibit animal methamphetamine caused-CNS excitation. • 厚朴 inhibit animal hypothalamus wake up CNS.

  12. （2）inhibit platelet adhesive • 厚朴酚与和厚朴酚能明显抑制胶原、花生四烯酸所诱导的家兔血小板血浆的聚集，并抑制ATP释放。其抑制作用与抑制血栓烷素A2（TXA2）的合成及细胞内的Ca2+流动有关。 • （3）anti-high Blood pressure & relax vessel muscle • 厚朴碱 low BP，animal showed anti K+、Ca2+、nonenpenephyrin caused artery contraction.
