Commas: Linking • A comma and a coordinating conjunction link two independent clauses. • Coordinating Conjunctions: • For • And • Nor • But • Or • Yet • So
Commas: Introducing • Put commas after introductory words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence.
Commas: Inserting • When words or phrases that are NOT necessary are inserted into a sentence, put a comma on both sides of the inserted material.
Commas: Four Other Uses • These are less common uses for the comma: • Quotations-Used to set off a direct quote from the rest of the text. • Dates and addresses • Numbers more than three places long • Clarity- used where needed to make something clear
