Lightweight UXO system Concept design For Berkeley Geophysics
Frank, Ugo, Here is my take on the UXO hand held, rendered as a small cart. The intent was to address this as a design for manufacture, rather than a Lab prototype. The primary focus is on field operation and the attendant requirements for simplicity, and robustness. This concept reflects a more final production concept than usual (without details). And I addressed operational requirements such as cost-per-unit, manufacturability, robustness, field-repair and parts change. The concept presented has three main features: 1. It assumes a high degree of integration, i.e. mechanical and electronic components are co-developed into integrated assemblies. 2. Tx and Rx fabrication can produce dimensionally consistent, self-supporting coils, especially Tx coils: and, 3. Structures are blow-molded or composite assemblies designed for high volume production. (electronics also designed for high vol production...). A word about Tx fabrication: We have experience and capability to fab self-supporting, dimensionally consistent Tx coils, but will have to develop tooling and procedures to achieve the consistency we will need. We will also have to do trade-offs with the electrical properties while we do this.... I have typical cross-sections and material choices in mind that seem like appropriate starting points. I also have tooling in mind, but Ugo may already have a plan. If we can balance electrical and mechanical properties and still have a mechanically stable coil assembly, the 'blow-molded' design has a range of advantages that coincide with the design targets. A word about 'blow-molded' design: Double-wall construction, hi-impact resistance, low weight, and low part cost, are hallmarks of the process. ( Along with ~zero conductivity ) If we use the process cleverly, we can also get very simple assemblies, low part count, easy parts changes, and terrific robustness at no extra production cost. The main expense will be in the integration and design, then development of production tooling. I have looked into this deep enough to reassure myself that there is a clear path to prototyping functional iterations before committing to expensive production tooling. The scope of our proposal should NOT include production tooling. NOTE: I did not include the battery pack Power Supply. Sorry.. I see it as a series of battery-packs worn on a belt on the Hips, or in a vest, a la TV cameramen; or in a backpack. THE WHEELS are ambiguous at this point. They present the possibility of eating up design effort. This needs a closer look. My take: An integrated detector assembly along these lines will be really robust, really cheap, and really simple.....when we get done. You could beat it with a baseball bat with not much effect. Even early, hand made prototypes could demonstrate this. The challenge is to integrate. Comments? Robin Robin Lafever
Two Transmitter configurations are presented. Both are arranged in a 16” X 16” X 10” volume With Receiver arrays along the edges. Flat ribbon cross-section transmitter coils (1 x 20 turns) Receiver arrays Rectangular cross-section transmitter coils (4 X 5 turns) Robin Lafever
