Regional backgroundHistory of mines • Eritrea and Ethiopian war in 1984. • More mines in 1996 • Devices washed by Al Gash river. • Bordering Localities affected. • Similarly Tokar and Al Fashaga Kubra and Sughra affected. • No areas marked by the warring factions.
Sub Office in Kassala • Preliminary assessment in 2003 • Second assessment in March 2005 • Responsible for 3 States • Structure • Funded by VTF

Achievements • Gathered general victim data, 449 victims • Recorded 41 DAs • Surveyed 9 roads • Cleared more than 100,000 sqm • Destroyed 4 AT, 1 250 Kg bomb,292 UXOs and1,335 Small Arms • Cleared Odi – Hamashkorieb road • Cleared Al Gahwa – HK road for NHA • Conducted MRE in 7 IDP camps
Conclusions/Summary • Kassala is most affected State in East. • Authorities cooperation in essential in achieving the goals. • Getting a clear picture of the threat through the LIS.
