13. ASH WEDNESDAY Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent in the Western Christian calendar. Occurring 46 days before Easter, it is a movable feast. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this 40-day liturgical period of prayer and fasting or abstinence. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of adherents as a celebration and remminder of human mortality and as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. The ashes used are typically gathered from the burning of the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday

14. MARZANNA Marzanna is a pagan springtime festival in Poland that signals the end of winter. It usually takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent. On this day a straw or rag effigy of Marzanna is constructed, sometimes by school children who then throw her into a river or a lake to “drown” her because the effigy is imbued with the negative qualities of the long, cold winter. This old custom predates Christian rites, so Marzanna is not universally observed throughout Poland.
