Building the Organization Circa 2000 to 2003
Fundamental change • More number and diverse project proposals were coming in. • Should we focus just on literacy? • More ideas of raising funds needed. • How to better evaluate these projects? • Increase awareness and visibility of the organization • Structure the organization formally
Should it be just Literacy? • Kuthambakkam (August 2002) Our first potentially sustainable project. Livelihood generation for the rural community. But, not related to literacy? Truly moving from the name- India Literacy Focus Group!
More $Money$ • Only fundraising activity till then: Coin and Can Collection! • More projects- more good projects raise more funds for these projects! • How?
What’s a good project? • Project evaluation process set-up (Fall 2001) • Important criteria identified and quantified • No way; its not THE perfect system…it does help, though!
Increase visibility • More people see Sankalp, more can we ask them to participate in the activities! • Helps in breaking the myth that we are “oh-so-serious” people! • Visibility translates into $$.
We can act too! Sankalp volunteers performing a skit.
Visible enthusiasm! See, working for Sankalp is fun!!!
Biggest Passion for us Indians! Sankalp-ISU Cricket Club organized Cricket Tournament (April 2003)
Sankalp, who? • Visibility amongst other organizations like Sankalp, helps us in getting their co-operation. • During the Serve India Forum (SIF) 2001 conference, we helped in the organization of the event.
Organizational matters • Because, organization matters! • Continue efforts to get more people not only to volunteer for events, but to lead the organization.
Transparency • Since we expect transparency from our partner NGOs, our patrons should also know about us: including details of accounts.
Newsletter (June 2001) • Dual purpose Reporting activities, etc. to patrons Creative outlet for the budding writers!
Leading from the top Dr. Balmurli Natarajan • Our faculty advisor since 2001 • Helped us become aware of many social issues; Encouraged debates, discussions on relevant topics.
