LATHE SAFETY. SPECIFIC PURPOSE. To shape a work piece by turning it against an edged tool. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES. Make sure wood is free of checks, knots & defects. Glued up work MUST cure for 24 hrs before being turned. Uncured glue lines may fail & fly apart.

  2. SPECIFIC PURPOSE • To shape a work piece by turning it against an edged tool

  3. SPECIFIC SAFETY RULES • Make sure wood is free of checks, knots & defects. • Glued up work MUST cure for 24 hrs before being turned. Uncured glue lines may fail & fly apart. • Lock tailstock & check for left or right movement before starting the lathe.

  4. Safety Rules Con’t • Move tool rest as close as possible to the stock & lock in place. Too much space will cause the tool to pull from your hands. • Start rough turning operations at slowest speed. Increase speed for finish turning. • Hold tools firmly with both hands.

  7. TURNING TIPS • CUTTING the tool digs into the revolving stock to peel away small shavings • SCRAPING the tool is held at right angles to the stock to wear away fin particles of wood • CENTERING draw two diagonal lines across opposing corners on the end of the stock
