Battle at Ninety-Six • Fighting broke out in the Boston area, when SC heard this they were sure Charleston was next because there were British ships in the harbor. • The first battle in SC was in the harbor, the next bloodshed battle was in Ninety-Six.
Battle at King’s Mountain • October 7, 1780 • Having achieved surprise on the Loyalists, the Patriots attacked and surrounded the Loyalists, inflicting heavy casualties. After an hour of battle, Ferguson was shot dead while trying to break the rebel ring, after which the Loyalists surrendered.
Battle at Cowpens • January 17, 1781 • Led by General Greene with the help of Pickens, they defeated Lord Cornwallis, head of the Loyalists. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXf7BaBRT8g
Battle at Sullivan’s Island • Colonel Moultrie built a fort at Sullivan’s Island. He built the fort of soft Palmetto logs. During battle the cannonballs could not penetrate the logs. • The flag was rescued by Jasper, they were able to hold off British troops for awhile.
Siege of Charles Town Took place from March to May 12, 1780 Charlestown was defeated by the Tories. After some time the Tories started Leaving South Carolina. The ones who stayed started to rob and mistreat South Carolinians. This made them mad, people who once supported British Were now turning against them.
Stamp Act • Put on colonists in 1765. Tax had to be paid on newspapers, documents, and other paper goods. The money was to fund the British troops. • Colonists were angry because they were taxed without their vote. “Taxation without representation”
The Tea Act • The tea act was not a tax, rather it was a monopoly. • In 1773 the Parliament passed a rule that all tea was to be bought from the British East India Tea Company. Colonists were angry. They dressed as Indians and dumped tea from 3 ships into the harbor in a sign of protest. The Parliament was trying to help the company by offering this monopoly as a way to keep them from going bankrupt.
The Tea Act • South Carolinians helped fellow colonists by sending rice and money to help them. • To show support colonist put tea in the basement of the Exchange and Custom House in Charleston. It stayed there for 4 years and rotted.
Intolerable Acts • The Intolerable Acts were laws that were really punishments that King George III put on the colonies. He did this to the Colonists because he wanted to punish them for dumping tea into the harbor at the Boston Tea Party. The Quakers petitioned King George to repeal or end the acts, but he said that the colonies must submit to these English laws.
First Continental Congress • 12 British delegates met in Philadelphia to discuss the Intolerable Acts and what they should do about them. • 56 people attended representing all 13 colonies except Georgia ( they were having Indian problems and were hoping to get support from the king) • Original thoughts were to have a boycott of economic goods coming from Britain.
Second Continental Congress • Met in Philadelphia to discuss the colonial plan of war and independence from Britain. • On July 4, 1775 the delegates met and wrote the Declaration of Independence.
