Mrs. Kara Meltebrink • Miami University - Bachelors in Elementary Ed. • Xavier University – Masters In Administration • Taught 6th grade at Mercer 7 years • 4th year teaching 4th grade • Married to Bill Meltebrink • 2 children-Billy 4 ½ & Steven 2 ½
Mrs. Lauren Tharp • Attended Ball State University and received my B.S. in elementary education • Currently attending Xavier University for masters • 10th year teaching, have taught in various grade levels, 4th year teaching 4th grade • Married to Clay Tharp, 2 daughters Emma 2 and Ava 4 months
Reading/L.A. • Reading Street – Scott Forsman • Work on reading skills, grammar, and writing • 6+1 Writing Traits/Writing Workshop • Mystery Reader – please refer to the sheet that comes home
Spelling • Working with words through brand name phonics • Given words on Friday, activities through the week, test on Thursday • Between 30-40 words given but not all words are tested
Science • Focus studies on scientific method, measurement, matter, physical and chemical changes, cells, classification, plants, ecosystems, weather and Earth’s changes, Nutrition and Growth/Development • 2 Science Experiments (1st 2 grading periods) • Science Fair is encouraged but not required - no extra credit will be given
Math • Investigations • Balanced Math Program, teach Ohio standards • Zip Strips • Lots of writing in math – gets students’ thinking of the process and strategies used, not just the answer.
Social Studies • Based on Ohio History • One week notice will be given for tests • Study guide provided before the test • Many interactive activities throughout the year
Planner and Homework • Students write assignments daily in their planners • Important information is also written in planner • Form of communication between school & home • Planner does NOT need to be signed every night • Homework should be no more than 30-45 minutes per night • Student’s responsibility to make sure ALL homework gets home and is complete
Accelerated Reader-AR • Students will read independently for at least 20 minutes each school day • Each student will be given a reading range and point goal to reach each quarter • When finished with a book, students will take a comprehension quiz over the story and receive points based on their score • An AR score will be given as part of their reading grade
Grading System • Letter grades – refer to grading comparison sheet in handbook • mygradebook.com allows you to go online and check your child’s progress • 1 password and 2 classwords – will be sent home soon
Rules and Logical Consequences • Follow Responsive Classroom Philosophy • Classroom rules will be coming home
