Congratulations on continuing through the process • The Process • Interview • Pitch • Feedback • Personalised emailed feedback
Your pitch • What do you say to the question: “What do you do?” • Your degree is not enough. • 1 minute to: • Tell your story • Sell yourself or an idea • Make an arrangement (a date?) • Leave a good impression
One formula is as follows: • Who am I? • What am I offering? • What evidence do I have for this? • How can I add value to you? • What do I want from you?
Example - Andrew • Who am I? Hi – I’m Andrew – Andrew Falconer. I’m based at Royal Holloway, where I advise students about a variety of careers and help them prepare to find work. • What am I offering? I have particular expertise in the area of interview coaching. A lot of people have trouble doing well in interviews: I work individually with clients to help them improve their interview skills, and get great jobs. • What evidence do I have for this? Over the last five years I’ve worked with hundreds of clients, including MBAs, delivering interview workshops and individual practise interview sessions. I have a folder of grateful emails from clients whose interviewing techniques have improved dramatically as a result of my coaching. • How could I add value to you? Working with me will significantly improve your chances of succeeding at interview. • What do I want from you? I’d love to hear about your background, and whether you’ve had any success interviewing for jobs so far.
The placement’s formula is as follows: • Who am I? • What am I offering? • What evidence do I have for this? • What do I want from this placement? • What will a successful placement mean for both of us? • What does my long term future look like?
Your turn Ten minutes to sketch out your two-minute pitch: • Who am I? • What am I offering? • What evidence do I have for this? • What do I want from this placement? • What will a successful placement mean for both of us? • What does my long term future look like?
Practice • Who am I? • What am I offering? • What evidence do I have for this? • What do I want from this placement? • What will a successful placement mean for both of us? • What does my long term future look like? • Feedback: • Are all elements covered? • Are they clearly signposted? • Did they come across as confident? • How would you improve it?
