  2. Credential- letter or certificate showing one’s right to a certain position. Examples- degrees; special training; CDA- Child Development Associate; SACS-Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (CHHS is SACS accredited), NAEYC-National Association for the Education of Young Children (this is for programs newborn-five years old; Sheltering Arms, Headstart, Paulding Kids University) Certification to declare that something is true, accurate Examples- Gifted NBCT- National Board Certified Teacher Industry Certifications-HCS, Business Ed, Marketing, Architectural Drawing and Engineering AAFCS-American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences other professions offer certifications for their professionals

GPSC- Georgia Professional Standard Commission- Established July 1991 by a legislative mandate Central responsibility-establishing a certification/licensure process that is streamlined understandable flexible to remove barriers and to attract qualified individuals to the education profession. Major purposes are: to simplify and make more efficient the process of certifying educational personnel in Georgia; to attract the highest possible number of qualified personnel to become educators in Georgia; to promote the hiring of qualified educators from other states; and to improve the level of preparation of educators.

  5. Routes to Certification- depends on certifying agency portfolio, testing, visits, demonstrations GACE testing- (Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators) tests in basic skills and content; also required for paraprofessionals who work in the school system.

  6. Routes to Teacher Certification • Traditional • Enroll in a state approved education program in college and take teacher preparation classes. (many require a minimum GPA) • One of your required classes-Education of Special Needs. • Complete technology requirement or GACE test of Computer Skill competency • Student Teach • Pass GACE • Receive clear and renewable certificate good for five years. • Renew certificate by completing 10 PLUs (professional learning units) or 10 college units within five years.

  7. Reciprocity-transferring certification from another state • Route A • You meet Georgia requirements and receive Clear Renewable Certificate • Route B (you don’t meet GA requirements) • You are employed but receive a Non-Renewable Certificate good for only a short time. • You complete special GA requirements including special needs class and technology requirement. • Receive Clear Renewable certificate good for 5 years.

  8. Georgia TAPPGeorgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program Process A. Teacher candidate screening, selection and placement • Bachelor’s degree (2.5 GPA) • Passing score on GACE Basic skills test • Successful criminal background check • Offer of full time teaching position B. Orientation and individual counseling

  9. C. First year of internship/induction • 6 seminars • Content course work- including special need class • GACE content test • Individualized plan of study • 3-person support team with school based mentor D. Second year of internship/induction • 4 seminars • Continued mentoring • Completion of course work • Completion of achievement portfolio/evaluation by TST • Successful completion of GACE Content Assessment.
