Learning Outcomes • Through experimentation, I can identify the indicators of chemical reactions having occurred.
When two or more elements are joined together during a chemical reaction, then a new substance called a compound is formed. The new substance usually looks different and behaves in a different way from the elements from which it was made. If elements do not react and are not joined together then a mixture is formed. Q1. What is formed when two or more elements join together? Q2. Is the new substance the same or different from the elements which made it? Q3. What is formed when the elements do not react and join together? Chemical Reactions
Collect the Sulphur Iron experiment card and do the experiment in pairs. Chemical Reactions Your teacher will demonstrate a chemical reaction between two elements, and you can try one yourself.
iron sulphur Mixtures • Mixtures are made when substances are physically mixed together. • Each substance stays the same and keeps its own properties. • Mixtures are usually easy to separate.
Compounds Iron sulphide • Compounds are made when elements react and chemically join together. • A new substance is formed with its own properties. • Compounds can be difficult to separate. watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5H6DVe5FAI
A mixtureof iron and sulphur particles The sulphur and Iron are still Elements. They are not joined chemically. They can be separated using a magnet
A compound between iron and sulphur particles The elements in the compound cannot be separated using a magnet. The elements are chemically joined.
Naming Compounds The compounds formed in the table have a slightly different name from the elements from which they were made. The 1st element keeps its name, but the 2nd element has some of its end letters changed to -ide. e.g. magnesium and oxygen react to form magnesium oxide. Q4. Name the compound formed in the reaction between Sulphur and Iron.
What Elements are in these Compounds? Iron and Oxygen Sodium and Chlorine Copper and Sulphur
Naming Compounds Your teacher may let you try the Card Sort for naming compounds. Arrange yourselves into groups of 2 or 3. Place the cards which have compound names on the table. Place the elements which are found in that compound under the compound name.
Word Equations The chemical reactions can be summarised by using a word equation. Magnesium + Oxygen Magnesium Oxide reactantsproduct(s) Q5. Write down a word equation for the reaction between Iron and Sulphur.
Summary When two or more elements are joined together during a chemical reaction then a new substance called a compound is formed. If elements do not react and are not joined together then a mixture is formed. Copper chloride contains copper and chlorine. Magnesium oxide contains magnesium and oxygen
