Octagon based Prism Hexagon based Prism Trapezoid Pyramid Triangle Cube Cone Parallelogram Kite Octagon Hexagon Rhombus Triangle based Prism Rectangular Prism Pentagonal Prism Let’s Review • Classify the following as either 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional
Triangle Trapezoid Parallelogram Kite Octagon Hexagon Rhombus 2D Figures
Octagon based Prism Pyramid Cube Cone Triangle based Prism Rectangular Prism Pentagonal Prism Hexagon based Prism 3D Figures
Octagon based Prism Pyramid Cube Cone Triangle based Prism Rectangular Prism Pentagonal Prism Hexagon based Prism 3D Figures Can we further classify these 3D figures?
Octagon based Prism Pyramid Cube Cone Triangle based Prism Rectangular Prism Pentagonal Prism Hexagon based Prism Prisms Pyramids What is the difference between a prism and a pyramid?
Prism • A prism has all rectangular sides connected by 2 parallel and congruent bases. The number of edges 1 base has is equal to the number of rectangular sides. Is a cylinder a Prism?
Pyramids • A pyramid has only 1 base with triangular faces whose vertices meet at a peak. The number of edges the base has is always equal to the number of triangular sides. Is a cone a Pyramid?
What shape is this then? • It has 2 bases • But they are not congruent • It has neither rectangular nor triangular sides • The sides are trapezoids
It is a Truncated Pyramid • If you were to extend all the lines connected the larger base to the smaller base, they would all meet, thus forming triangles, therefore it is a modified or truncated pyramid
Edge Face Angle Right Prism Base Surface Area Where 2 faces meet A 2 dimensional side of a 3 dimensional figure a prism in which the sides are all perpendicular to the base The face on which the prism rests or the face that determines the number of edges The total area or all sides of a 3D figure Vocabulary Review Identify the following vocabulary terms as they relate to 3D measurement:
Examining and Visualizing Nets to help Find Surface Area • In order to find the S.A., you must be able to visualize and identify the number of sides (2D faces) a figure has and the dimensions of each face • Turn to page 220 in your textbook
