What is a prism? • Def: A prism is a solid with flat faces and 2 “bases”. • We name the prism based on the shape of the bases.
Triangular Prism ( Triangle base) D A E F B C △ABC, △DEF are the bases ▭ACFD,▭BCFE,▭ABED are the faces are the edges
Rectangular prism (Rectangular “bases”) F E A B G H C D Which rectangles are the bases? Which rectangles are the faces?
Calculating Areas • Lateral Area (L.A.) = area of faces added up • The faces are always rectangles! • Total Surface Area (T.A. or S.A.) = area of faces and bases • This can be called total area or surface area as well.
Example 1 • Find the lateral area and surface area. Leave all answers exact unless otherwise specified. 7 6 8
Example 2 • Find the lateral area and surface area. Leave all answers exact unless otherwise specified. 8 13 10
Example 3 • Find the lateral area and surface area. Leave all answers exact unless otherwise specified. 5 8
Example 4 • A regular hexagonal prism has an edge measuring 4 and the side of the base measures 10. Find the lateral area and surface area.
Example 5 • Find the total area. Leave all answers exact unless otherwise specified. 6 4 8
Example 6 • Find the total area. Leave all answers exact unless otherwise specified. 4
