  6. Abraham • Abraham believed in one singular creator • G-d speaks to Abraham, and he wanders the earth • Abraham is told by G-d to sacrifice his son Isaac • As Abraham begins, an angel intervenes • His son is spared • A lamb is sacrificed instead

  11. Moses • Born during Jewish enslavement in Egypt • Pharaoh orders all Hebrew male babies drowned • Moses escapes by floating down the Nile River • Pharaoh’s daughter adopts him • He is raised as a prince

  12. Moses • Moses kills an Egyptian, and flees • Leads people, but returns to Egypt • Frees the Israelites from bondage • Leads the Jews to Israel

  13. Religious beliefs • There are many sects of Judaism • Different groups have different beliefs • But there are a few universal beliefs

  14. G-d • G-d created the universe, and continues to work in it. • G-d chose the Jews as his people to be the ethical and moral example for the world • Belief is not as important as action

  17. Torah • Torah teaches: • Nature of G-d and the creation • History of the Jews • Code of laws for society

  18. The Messiah • Jewish Messiah will not be a divine figure, like Jesus and Christianity • Great political, moral, and spiritual leader • Make Israel the capital of a new world, with the Messiah as world leader

Major Holy Days • Rosh Hashanah: Jewish New Year • Yom Kippur: Jewish Day of Atonement • Atone: Seek forgiveness for sin • Hanukah: Celebration of Jewish resistance against Macedonian empire • Passover: Commemorates the Exodus • Purim: Commemorates Jewish deliverance from the Persian Empire (Book of Esther)
