The MediterraneanSea : a high spot of biodiversity • It hosts 8% of described marine species despite covering less than 1% of the global oceans. • 28% of the marine fauna is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea • 60% of the flora species (including algae and seagrasses) is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea • It hosts 15 cetacean species present in the region • It comprise breeding grounds of the Atlantic Blue fin tuna , a white shark nursery areas, hundreds of sea turtles nesting sites, and the last population of one of the most endangered species, the monk seal
The Mediterranean Sea: important threats • a strategic maritime route, including substantial oil traffic. • attract millions of tourists each year, including cruise ship tourists. • Both fish stocks and catches have decreased over the years, due to over-exploitation, fleet overcapacity, non-selective and destructive fishing practices. • Climate change • Pollution (eutrophication, toxic chemicals…)
What protection in the Mediterranean? • About 21 countries • Close to 200 MPAs (apart 500 N2000 at Sea)
Benefits of MPAs and success stories • to monitor environmental integrity and change & provide representative areas where to undertake research • to bring alternative income to local stakeholders and contribute to sustainable development • to bring indirect economic benefits at the national level • Marine protected areas: • to protect extraordinary features • to promote sustainable management of marine resources • to enhance public awareness of the marine environment and provide opportunities for applied education
Some success stories • Environmental Education: Miramare MPA (Italy) • Sustainable financing (products/hotels..) : Cinque Terre Park (Italy) • Involve traditional fisheries into MPA management: Torre Guaceto MPA (Italy) • Sustainable tourism management (diving charter): Port-Cros National Park (France)
Some success stories • Repcet in Pelagos Sanctuary (France-Italy-Monaco) : software system dedicated to to limit the risks of collision between large cetaceans and large vessels. • Monitoring : Port-Cros Park (France) – biodiversity and human uses Observatory • Designation of the Strait of Bonifacio (France) as a Particularly Sensitive Sea Area.
The MedPAN network: a snapshot • Aims to facilitate exchanges between MPAs managers to improve their management efficiency • A legally independent structure with an international governance • 9 founding members, 30 members, 22 partners • Development of strategic partnerships : RAC/SPA, WWF, IUCN, GFCM, CIESM…
2010-2012 MedPAN Strategy • Analyzes the MPA network: MPA database, Status and regional conference • Supports MPA managers: workshops, trainings, tools, resource center, small grants • Coordinates with regional/international bodies : • representation, • regional projects feedback/durability, • exchange with other networks in the world • Raises awareness on MPAs : website/newsletter Importance of this network in developing links and understanding between managers, scientists and decision makers.
To create new coastal and High-Sea MPAs and/or extend size of existing MPAs To improve ecological coherence and representativity of MPA network Challenges of the MPA Network • Demonstrate benefits of MPAs • Involve all relevant stakeholders • Improve management efficiency of MPAs • Reinforce and sustain MedPAN network activities
