  1. What to Expect Before, During, and After Cataract Surgery Cataract is a common condition among the elderly, troubling their visuals. This condition develops when the lens of the human eye is clouded with proteins, thus allowing insufficient light to reach the retina. The eye lens is primarily made of water and protein, but as one ages, the protein may accumulate and form a cloud which inhibits proper vision. If the proteins continue to clump, it will prevent the retina from receiving enough amount of light, hence, making it hard to get vivid images. In severe cases, it can lead to blindness. Well, you don’t have to worry as there are many ways you can deal with cataracts despite the inevitable woes of age. However, from numerous researches, most physicians have found out that surgery is the best cataracts treatment to eliminate the condition for good. Before surgery Several tests are done before the surgery, mostly to determine the size and shape of the eye. The curve of the cornea is also measured to get the right type of lens to replace if need be. You are advised not to drink or eat for not less than 12 hours before the surgery.

  2. During the surgery The area around the eye will first be washed to make sure it's clean, then a few drops are added to the eye to dilate the pupil. A small cut is made in the cornea and another at the eye lens capsule. The eye surgeon will then break up the lens and remove the lens pieces with a probe. For effective cataracts surgery, the lens is replaced with an intraocular lens (IOL) to replace your damaged lens. The intraocular lens is an artificial lens made of plastic or silicone to replace the damaged biological lens. After the operation, the eye can be covered with a patch to keep it safe from contamination and external disturbances until the whole eye heals. After surgery Discomfort is normal after cataract surgery. You should not be alarmed when you start experiencing mild itching as it happens sometimes. Some patients may be highly responsive to both light and touch for a few weeks. In case the sensitivity heightens, the physician recommends you to add eye drops, which also reduces any possible risk of infection. Under normal conditions, you are expected to be completely healed within eight weeks. Your vision may be fuzzy at first, but after some time, the healing eye adjusts fully, and you will be able to focus well. After a few months, you’ll get used to the improved colour vision and normally see again. However, you will have to use glasses to avoid direct sunlight or any risk of pathogens infecting the eye. Cataracts are not a condition that should be taken lightly. Did you know that if you are experiencing cataracts at a young age, you risk going blind in a few years? Many people may prompt to control the condition via subtle ways. However, that will only put its effects at bay for a few days. Why not just get rid of it? Surgery should not scare you at all, especially when you know eligible physicians got you covered.
