  2. World Health Organization (WHO) • Specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that acts as a coordinating authority on international public health • Established on 7th April 1948 • Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland

  3. Contd… • WHO's constitution -"is the attainment by all people of the highest possible level of health.” • Major task is to combat disease, especially key infectious diseases, and to promote the general health of the people of the world.

Activities • Coordinates international efforts to control outbreaks of infectious diseases, such as SARS, Malaria, Tuberculosis, Swine flu, and AIDS • Sponsors programs to prevent and treat diseases. • Supports the development and distribution of safe and effective vaccines, pharmaceutical diagnostics, and drugs. • Carries out various health-related campaigns — for example, to boost the consumption of fruits and vegetables worldwide and to discourage tobacco use. • WHO also conducts health research in communicable diseases, non-communicable conditions and injuries.
