Chana Garrett 200812345 My Rescued Friend When I first brought my cat home from the Humane Society she was a mangy, pitiful animal. She was so thin that you could count her vertebrae just by looking at her. Apparently she was declawed by her previous owners, then abandoned or lost. Since she couldn't hunt, she nearly starved. Not only that, but she had an abscess on one hip. The vets at the Humane Society had drained it, but it was still scabby and without fur. She had a terrible cold, too. She was sneezing and sniffling and her meow was just a hoarse squeak. And she'd lost half her tail somewhere. Instead of tapering gracefully, it had a bony knob at the end.

Correct Mrs. Garrett wants her students to learn how to use punctuation marks correctly. She hopes this lesson will teach them that. In fact, she hopes that her students will use punctuation correctly from now on. When her students write a paragraph, they should know where to put commas. They can use semicolons when necessary; however, they should use them sparingly and correctly. They must capitalize the first letter of each sentence and they should check their spelling. If they do not do this correctly next time, Mrs. Garrett will take more points off and they will not pass.

Also, let’s stop by the dry cleaners and pick up my suit. • Only use “besides” when you are adding more information to a previously stated point. Do not use “besides” when you are stating a new point.

Always use complete sentences • First, understanding. • This is NOT A SENTENCE! • First, a parent must understand his child.
Watch your transitions • What’s more • This is not appropriate for academic writing • Replace with “Furthermore” or “Moreover” • Last but not the least • This is a cliché, it is overused and it is not mature • Replace with “Lastly” or “Finally” • In a word • Unless you are following this with just ONE word, don’t use it! • Replace with “In conclusion” or even better, just conclude!
