Formatting Papers MLA Specifications
All Papers Must Adhere to Following Specifications • Title and Identification • MLA does NOT require a title page. On the first page, place your name, instructor, course/section #, and date on separate lines against the upper left margin. • On the following line, Center your title • The title should not be bold faced, underlined, in quotes, or italicized. • Format titles of works as required • Begin paper on next line.

Margins • 1 Inch margins ALL AROUND • Adjust Defaults if Necessary • Left align text • DO NOT justify the paragraphs • INDENT the 1st line of each new paragraph one-half inch from the left margin (about 1 tab space)
Spacing • ALL MLA PAPERS ARE UNIFORMLY DOUBLE SPACED FROM BEGINNING TO END WITHOUT EXCEPTION • This includes works cited page, block quotes, and endnotes • There is NEVER an extra space between paragraphs** • If you WP program does so as a default, you need to select the proper layout • Leave ONE space after a mark of terminal punctuation.
Pagination • Always include page numbers and a header • Put the page number preceded by your last name (header) in the upper right corner of each page except the first
Fonts • The default MLA font is: • 12 Point Font** • TIMES NEW ROMAN • DO NOT ADJUST FONTS!!!
Formatting Titles • Titles of long works (novels, plays, long poems) should be italicized • The Odyssey • The Old Man and the Sea • Othello • Titles of short works should be in quotation marks but NOT italicized • “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” • “Diamond as Big as the Ritz” • “Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock”
