Freedom Rides • Organized to travel through the South to protest segregation in bus terminals • Alabama • Encounter violence and resistance • White racists attack them with chains, brass knuckles, pistols • Attacks will continue in Anniston, Birmingham and other cities in Alabama • Impact • Pres. Kennedy will send federal troops to escort buses • Interstate Commerce Commission will ban segregation in all facilities (waiting rooms, restrooms, and lunch counters)

Migrant Workers • Cesar Chavez • Founder of United Farm Workers • Use protests and non-violent tactics • Goal- better wages, shorter hours and better working conditions for migrant workers • Mainly in California and Florida • Mainly Hispanic workers • Migrant workers- spend a few months in the US working then go back to native country
Women’s Movement • Betty Friedan • Publish “The Feminine Mystique” in 1963 • Argue that women are just as capable as men • Encourage and inspire women to join the work force, go to college, etc. and give up life of being a traditional housewife • Equal Rights Amendment • Been proposed since 1972 but never passed • Still possible that it could become the 28th Amendment someday • Roe v. Wade (1973) • Legalizes abortion and a woman’s right to get an abortion
Environmental Protection • Environmental Protection Agency • Began in 1970 under President Richard Nixon • Influential in passing many acts regarding clean air, water, anti-pollution, protection of endangered species, and hazardous waste • Acts • 1963- Clean Air Act • 1965- Water Quality Act • 1968- Scenic Rivers Preservation Act • 1966- Endangered Species Preservation Act
