  8. OUR HIGH IMPACT APPRENTICESHIP (HIA)

  9. Principles of our Model • A higher-level curriculum derived from the workplace and focused on business benefit – apprentices will increase their skills and knowledge by developing solutions and improvements to real work-based issues . • Customisable – our model can be readily tailored to meet any job role, in any business, in any sector . Employers will be empowered to develop customised frameworks whilst maintaining HE and NOS quality standards. • A blended approach incorporating work-based activity, a dedicated e-learning portal (including e-portfolio) and short but intensive face-to-face interventions at critical points. This reduces apprentice time lost from the workplace – a particular benefit for SMEs. • Accreditation & APEL – our model includes a toolkit to accredit employers’ own higher level in-house training and to recognise apprentices’ prior knowledge. • Integrated & coherent – We will challenge current practice. The HA will be transformed into an integrated programme rather than a collection of standalone qualifications. • Transferable & Scaleable – UDC’s model has potential for significant impact on HA numbers . Our model reduces the time and cost burden associated with development and validation (particularly beneficial for SMEs ). • Supporting in-company tutors – UDC’s integrated infrastructure

  10. Rationale for HA in Supporting Work Based Learning “If there is to be step-change in appetite for and recognition of Higher Apprenticeships; work-based trainers involved in supporting the progression of apprentices must experience higher-level learning themselves. Only in this way will they fully develop the skills, expertise and knowledge needed to teach and train in the workplace at higher levels”.

  11. Supporting Work Based Learning HA Framework We envisage an HIA Framework at levels 4 and 5. • Level 4 will be discrete and complete and will equip work-based trainers with the knowledge, skills and competence (including IAG) to work more effectively with learners at L2 and particularly L3 to prepare for their progression to L4. • The L5 HA programme will offer a Foundation Degree to fully equip graduates with the knowledge and skills to support Higher Apprentices.

  12. FEATURES OF THE CORE FRAMEWORK Work package 1: • We will build an innovative, transferable HA framework model which evidences competence; knowledge and understanding; personal learning and thinking skills within an integrated whole qualification. The model will transform HAs into an equally recognised strand of Higher Education in their own right. Work package 2: • We will develop an e-support infrastructure to be accessed by apprentices, employers and work-based tutors incorporating a dedicated e-portal, to channel support directly into the workplace. • We will also develop generic and sector specific e-learning content. Our assessment strategy will utilise cutting-edge assessment techniques within an e-portfolio including evidence for functional skills and ERR.

  13. Components of the Core Framework (Illustrative) We have the basis for a successful model through our Work Based FdA programmes with the events and health sectors.

  14. Key Deliverables • A fully transferable HIA Framework model applicable to any job role, in any company, in any sector (March 2013) • A longitudinal research study (interim report April 13) to strengthen the evidence base for the case for Higher Apprenticeships to an increasing number of employers. • A SSC/HE Collaborative Forum to overcome barriers and build shared understanding of our transformative approach to HAs (April 2012) • A HAs Conference for stakeholders to share experiences and identify opportunities for future growth (Spring 2015) • Develop the HE work-based learning network to embrace in-company apprenticeship tutors (ongoing) • A total of 450 apprentices
