Power Electronics Interface Converter ~ L • Output to Load • - Adjustable DC • Sinusoidal AC • - High-frequency AC Source Controller POWER ELECTRONICS C-DAC Thiruvananthapuram Role of Power Electronics The power electronics interface facilitates the transfer of power from the source to the load by converting voltages and currents from one form to another, in which it is possible for the source and load to reverse roles. The controller shown in Fig. allows management of the power transfer process in which the conversion of voltages and currents should be achieved with high energy-efficiency and high power density. 2

C-DAC Thiruvananthapuram POWER ELECTRONICS International Scenario • USA has launched a number of programmes to promote the Power Electronics Technology • Power Electronics Building Block (PEBB) programme sponsored by Department of Defense • Centre for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) by National Science Foundation (NSF) created at Virginia Technology University • Japan launched a National Project on “R&D of Ultra Low-Loss-Power Devices Technologies” • China and European union have launched similar Power Electronics R&D programmes 9
