Physical and Chemical Changes. Physical Property. Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the substances that make the material. Examples: - texture, color, size, shape, density, melting and boiling point, odor, weight, mass, etc. Physical Change.

Physical Property • Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the substances that make the material. • Examples: - texture, color, size, shape, density, melting and boiling point, odor, weight, mass, etc.
Physical Change • Change that ONLY affects physical properties of a substance. Involves a change in size, shape, or state of a substance. • Examples: • Melting, boiling, changing size or shape, etc. • Making a baseball bat!
Chemical Property • Describes the way a substance may change or react to form other substances. • Examples: • Oxidation (rusting) • Fermentation • Rotting • Flammability • Reaction with acids
Chemical Change • Substances undergo changes that produce 1 or more new substances. The new substances have new properties. • Signs: smoke produced, light produced, heat produced, color change, etc. • Example: Iron rusting, fireworks, burning leaves
