Project Gold Celebrating & Cherishing Kōwhai Kōwhai – the last remaining widespread tree species indicative of the original tree-land of Central Otago • Kōwhai is one of many tree species that has undergone a massive decline since the arrival of humans • Protecting and restoring kōwhai could be the stimulus to cherish and protect other relict native trees in Otago • This need is most acute in dry Central Otago where trees such as Hall’s tōtara, mountain toatoa, bog pine, and Hector’s tree daisy have been reduced to tiny, fragmented populations
