3. The problem was how to clear up the valley roadway blocking the way to soum center.

4. The rocky and bumpy road makes a long drive and consumes more fuel.

5. In winter, blocked with snow, it causes even more hardships. Children have difficulties to come home for winter holidays. Herders lose contact with soum for a long time. Can’t get help in disaster situations They can’t access medical services in the soum center

6. The Soum Governor has been asking Aimag Governor to give 20 Mio MNT to clear up the road for 10 years without results.

7. This spring at the PUG meeting, herders as usual discussed the problem again…

8. This time, the Head Soum Association of PUGs made a suggestion to herders “instead of complaining how about trying it ourselves”. They sat together and made a small plan and budget:

9. What happened next… • Governor easily found a tractor to rent for 700 000 MNT. • Green Gold Project provided timbers from local sources. • Herders found 3 gers to sleep in. • Every two families donated 1 sheep for food. • 3 women herders volunteered to cook. • After 3 weeks they started work

10. In 20 days, the road was cleared and leveled.
