Goals of the Lesson The goal of the lesson is that students will be able to segment one-syllable words into phonemes in order to spell Long e words. • VSC Standards • 1.0 General Reading Process • B- phonics • 2- decode words in grade-level texts • b- decode words with letter combinations, such as consonant digraphs, blends, and special vowel patterns
Introducing the Lesson • Review with the students what the different long vowel sounds are • Students will say each long vowel sounds out load • Students will state the rules they know about long vowels • As a class we will read Sheep in a Jeep • As we read the story students will identify long e words in the story • After we have read the story students will sort these words into ee and ea words
Online Materials • www.starfall.com • Online story “Pete’s Sheep” • Online activity building ee words • http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/wordsandpictures/ • Online poem “Meet the Creeps” • Online poem “A Meal by the Sea” • Both poems have two activities to complete after they read the poem
Other Materials • A set of index cards with long e words • Students will be required to sort them into ee and ea words • A long e worksheet from enchantedlearning.com • Students will be required to complete at least three of these pictures
Assessment After these tasks are complete students will write at least 3 sentences with at least 5 different long e words spelled correctly.
Grading Rubric • PR- The student will write at least three complete sentences with at least 5 long e words spelled correctly • IP- The student will write at least 3 complete sentences with 3 to 4 long e words spelled correctly • EM- The student will write 2 complete sentences with 3 to 4 long e words spelled correctly • ND- The student writes less than two complete sentences or less than 3 long e words spelled correctly
