Case study – gender dynamics, leadership, women’s participation and market problems • ULT-Malindi: leadership dominated by men. Men took advantage of their wives’ membership. • Matumaini A: female leadership has allowed women to participate equally and benefits have trickled down to all members.
Case study – gender dynamics, leadership, women’s participation and market issues • Upendo Groups: when they became a mixed group and had male leaders, female members did not equally participate in decision-making. • Interventions should: • Support women leaders and also develop strategies to encourage women to join groups. • Encourage quotas for women leaders and support them to build leadership skills.
Story of personal change – Halima Mvungi • Stigmatised as a machokoo in the carrot market, yet holds an important position. • Experience has enabled her to build good business skills. • Employs five men and her brother. • Pays school fees for her two children and four siblings, looks after her mother and has a house for her and her children. • She has capitalised on informal collective action to reach a higher value trade and break barriers. However such women have not been reached by interventions which tend to focus on formal CA.
