Household Robots PowerPoint by: Sean Badurina
The Present • There are several household robots of the present that cost a lot of money, but are effective for lazy people like me! Some of these robots are for aiding the elderly or the young kids, and some are for simply mowing, vacuuming, and other tasks that are dull and repetitive. Some of the better ones even recharge themselves! But enough of my chatter, time to show you robots!
The Roomba! • Even the name sounds fun, and the best thing about the Roomba is that it vacuums for you! The Roomba is in the background in these slides, and the way the Roomba works is that it maps the room and the objects in it’s path. The Roomba will sometimes bump into things, and will leave dirt in corners. Who cares? • IT’S VACCUMING THAT WE DON’T DO!Plus, it doesn’t count as slavery!
The Hug • The hug is designed to help the elderly get along in life. The Hug is basically a huggable pillow phone. You say the name of who you want to call into the microphone on the top, and it contacts other hugs.
Past robotic inventions • Now we get to the past robotic inventions! Though not considered ‘robots’, they helped pave the way for future inventions.
The Vacuum Cleaner • The vacuum cleaner helped families far and wide! Gone are the days of painstakingly angering yourself out of OCDness by using a broom to try getting every single particle of dirt! This invention uses a fan in the back, with a bag in the opening so that there is suction that captures stuff in the vacuum bags. At least, this is my understanding of it.
Computers! • Computers for computing information sprouted up with the invention of the Abacus, but modern computers began with Charles Babbage. The computer was only punch cards and vacuum tubes at that time, but now it is a trilabyte machine made of silicon and gold. I personally need to learn how a computer works.
Future Robot System • This is not an invention, but an entire system of robots linked to the main computer. This is called the MAID system… so yes, this is an invention.
Maid system • There are four MAID system components: • Mower • Automated Vacuum Cleaner • Integrated Security • Database
5 modern housebot problems • 1. It is hard to map terrain when it always changes • 2. Hard to supply power • 3. The current state of AI • 4. Safety issues • 5. Expensive if covering 1-4
Solutions! • The MAID system will constantly communicate with the main base • Enough battery power for 6-8 hours, and plugs into main station when low on battery • Advanced AI in robots, and powerful computer that controls all bots individually • Safety stop activated by touch or voice • Robots will have off the shelf components to reduce costs
Mower • The mower… well, mows your lawn! It grinds grass to the point of becoming a natural fertilizer, and is waterproof! So thieves can’t steal it, it is passcode protected.
Automatic vacuum • I have no picture for this machine, but it would be similar to the Roomba, and would be automatically checking the surfaces and the amount of cleaning it has done in each room.
The Integrated Security Component • The security component hooks up to the house, and alarms you. There are also flashing lights for the deaf. This robot also calls authorities, and has a camera for what happened. You can also see the objects moving in the dark, and the robot places footprints where the intruder was located.
The DATABASE! • This is it, the core of the whole system! This connects the whole MAID system together. For example, the footprints from the Integrated Security Component appear on the Database. The Mower and Vacuum scan the room, and update the info in the database.
